The word ―Religion‖ is derived from the Latin word,
―Religare,‖ which means ―to bind tightly.‖ We are a religious
people because we are bound tightly to a religious tradition.
We are conservatives because our chief goal in life is to ―keep
the faith,‖ to preserve - conserve - that which has been handed
down to us. At the same time, we are radicals because the
religious tradition we keep is our answer to life’s root
questions.
In this conservative tradition, we radicals take seriously
the words of the Apostle Paul: ―May the Lord be generous in
increasing your love and make you love one another and the
whole human race as much as we love you.‖ Actually, we
come together to cherish and conserve the most radical
tradition in the world!
Radical, because the tradition we take seriously points to a
new heaven and a new earth; to the time of hope fulfilled; to
the time when all humankind will be at peace. Radical,
because all of these things will come to pass through the
power of love, and love is the very root of our holy
conservative tradition.
For example — A man who worked for a county agency
was delivering meals to an elderly woman one day. The
woman’s only child was visiting and the man praised the
woman for having such a nice son. ―I have eight children of
my own,‖ he said. ―Eight kids!‖ exclaimed the woman. ―I
love my son so much that I can’t imagine dividing that love by
eight.‖ ―Lady,‖ the man said gently, ―You don’t divide your
love - you multiply it!‖ In so saying, that man wonderfully
exemplified the spirit of a true Christian
