John the Baptist believed that people could change, that within the human heart was a desire to be lovingly human. He called on all who came to hear him to allow the spark of that desire to flame up into a fire of love. He demanded that each person take a good long look at what was keeping that from happening.
When you see the problem, he said, repent, and ask God’s help that you may be changed. Good advice then, good advice now! But how does this take place in a practical way? Someone has written what has been called, “The Perfect Church-Goers Prayer.” Perhaps it might help to point us in the right direction!
I will do more than only belong - I will participate.
I will do more than care - I will help.
I will do more than believe - I will practice.
I will do more than be fair - I will be kind.
I will do more than forgive - I will love.
I will do more than earn - I will enrich.
I will do more than teach - I will serve.
I will do more than live - I will grow.
I will do more than be friendly - I will be a friend!
Lord, we will do more than talk about and sing about and pray about the coming Kingdom! Lord, we will go “out there” and share with others the vision of the God of love we see in you! Think about it!!
